Susan is a woman of dual-national background and upbringing (Iranian
and Scottish), is English speaking but speaks other languages include French
and Farsi. A recent new mother she is a multi-disciplinary artist, whose
work encompasses fine art as well as commercial design, she came to the
United States in late 1983. For the past seven years she has lived in New
York City which she has come to consider "home", although
assignments and commissions take her to countries such as Jordan, Italy, and
Trinidad. During the summer, Susan teaches at Parsons School of Design and
at the Lower East Side Print Shop, both in Manhattan.
Susan's home, neighborhood, and personality highlight the best
features of New York City. Easily accessible to the rush and excitement of
the "Big Apple", her home is a four story frame house, which was
built in 1874. It sits on a wide, tree-lined street primarily of brownstone
homes in Clinton Hill, a landmark district of Brooklyn. There is a spacious
back garden, shaded by an old Canadian maple tree. Two guest rooms are
located on the third floor of the house and share a sky lit, full bathroom.
The rooms, fresh and airy with wide-plank, original pine floors, and are
furnished with antique iron beds, simple chairs and tables, corn plants, and
bamboo blinds. The entire house has an old world and rustic charm,
with a staircase which is practically spiral, two marble fireplaces, and one
exceptionally ornate ceiling of original plaster work. Breakfast is served
in a farmhouse style, eat-in kitchen which opens out into the back garden.
Tobacco smoking is not permitted in the house, but guests may smoke in the
garden. Guests are requested not to wear their outdoor shoes in the
house and may want to bring slippers or house shoes with them.
Clinton Hill is an historically rich neighborhood which offers an
increasing variety of restaurants (West African, Cambodian, French, Chinese,
Caribbean, and Arab, as well as traditional American "diners") and
jazz bars. The house is located half a mile from Brooklyn Academy of Music
as well as within easy walking distance of Fulton Shopping Mall and the Long
Island Railroad. Brooklyn Academy of Music - commonly known as BAM - is
renowned for the international caliber of its programmes, which include
music festivals and dance performances; in addition, it has just opened a
multi-screen cinema. Prospect Park and The Brooklyn Museum and Botanic
Gardens, zoo and Japanese gardens are one mile from the house.
